I have to admit I didn't even know suika games were their own genre since the only other one I ever played before Suikaiju was PuzzMiX based on the Azure Striker Gunvolt series. But, apparently, they're like, a big deal or something? And, wow, there's actually a lot of them on Xbox already.
Anyway, the basics of these games is that you drop pieces into the gameplay field and if two pieces that are the same touch, they combine into something new. So you start with small little pieces and they combine and combine and combine into bigger and bigger pieces until they're taking up a huge chunk of the play area. It's pretty fun and addictive and can get pretty challenging when the field starts getting filled up with dozens of pieces of various sizes.
Something small growing into something huge seems like a perfect fit for a kaiju game, right? It's kinda bland here in Suikaiju, though. You're dropping kaiju eggs, I guess, and on the left side of the screen there's a character that starts out as a little guy that grows into a bigger kaiju as you start combining bigger and bigger eggs. And that's kinda it. There's no epic music, or kaiju roars, or city destruction, or anything. Just a little guy on the side of the screen vaguely reminiscent of Godzilla but definitely not Godzilla for legal reasons. But you can't see it because I put our mascot Haruko there instead. Sorry, not sorry.
That isn't to say the game isn't still fun - the core suika concept is hard to mess up - but I just wish it was more kaiju-y, y'know? It also has to be noted that you can get all 1000 Xbox gamerscore in about 10-minutes here. You'll definitely get all of them in your very first game. Good thing the game is still addictive and fun on it's own.
Here's the key point with Suikaiju, though - It's $4. You really can't go wrong for $4. Even if it has really easy achievements and the kaiju stuff just feels tacked on, you definitely get your money's worth. So if you're a suika fan, and or a kaiju fan, give Suikaiju a look.
