Apex Heroines is Pure Skill-Based Hot Busty Waifu Action

Welcome back my weebs and otakus. This time we're taking a look at Apex Heroines, another fanservice-y waifu action game from publisher Happy Player that has been on Switch for a while but just released on Xbox. It's pretty good. Not Taboo Trial-good, but pretty good.

For a video version of this article skip down to the bottom.

While they were made by different developers, both Apex Heroines and Taboo Trial were both published by Happy Player, and released on Xbox a week apart, so it's hard not to compare them a bit. They're both 3D action games where you play as busty waifus, and while Taboo Trial was a little disappointing in the fanservice department, Apex Heroines puts the T&A a little more front and center. Also, Taboo Trial is a roguelite where you could oops accidentally a crazy powerful build by the end, but Apex Heroines is a straight up skill-based action game.

So, Apex Heroines is a 3D bralwer / beat-em-up where you control a team of busty waifus that fight enemies because of ... I dunno, reasons. Each girl has a different weapon and special skill, and they all play fairly differently, but your "main character" is a Jill of all trades and can use any of the weapons. You can also upgrade the main character as well as dress her up in unlockable outfits, and some of them are "chef kiss" fantastic looking.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple. A little too simple, actually. You have light and heavy attacks, a unique special attack for each weapon, and you can dodge. And that's it. Each enemy has basically one attack with a long windup so you learn pretty quickly how to deal with all of them with little trouble. Bosses are more difficult, and have more attacks, but with a little patience the game is actually pretty easy. It's all a matter of rushing in when you have an opening, getting your 2-3 hits in, and then dodging back out of the way. Honestly, it's kind of not really all that exciting once you recognize attack patterns and slowly starting grinding away at their health bar a few hits at a time.

That's really my biggest problem with Apex Heorines - it's ultimately just kind of boring. In a way it's more satisfying than Taboo Trial because it's entirely skill based, but that skill ceiling is actually fairly low and once you figure things out it's pretty shallow.

It also has to be noted that Apex Heroines is $25 with a bunch of DLC costumes that cost $5 each, which is kind of insane.

Taboo Trial and Apex Heroines are two different games that both stand on their own, but if I had to choose between the two I'd say Taboo Trial is better. It just has more interesting gameplay. Apex Heroines has a slight edge in the fanservice department, but that just isn't enough for us. Don't get me wrong, still give Apex Heroines a shot, but it's like a 7 where Taboo Trial is a 9.
