UFO Robot Grendizer: Feast of the Wolves is Awesome. Don't Listen to Reviews

UFO Robot Grendizer: Feast of the Wolves, based on the 1970's giant robot anime UFO Robot Grendizer, is an incredible homage to the time period that was clearly made with love and attention to detail that was, unfortunately, completely lost on reviewers that didn't have any idea what they were playing and gave it a 59 average on Metacritic. It's a great game that I highly recommend.

Let's talk about the reviews, though. There are a lot of games out there where the right person needs to review it in order to really give it the credit it deserves. You can't review something with a "It has to appeal to everyone or it isn't good" mentality because that kind of misses the point. Even if UFO Robot Grendizer is really only a 60 or less to normal people, who gives a shit? To fans of 70's giant robot anime, giant robots in general, or 70's anime in general, it is a wonderful love letter to the genre that we can appreciate. It was made for us, not for normies, so fans of the genre should have been the ones to review it.

It's the same issue that Earth Defense Force always has. They get 60 Metacritic average but fans of the games love the hell out of them. Oh, they're clunky, oh they aren't polished, oh they're repetitive, oh, they run badly - who cares! Again, they aren't for normies. They are for fans. Fans should review them, and they should be scored based on how they will appeal to fans. Period.

It sucks that a game like Deadly Premonition, which is actually one of the worst games ever ... is somehow beloved because of its quirks and weirdness and flaws but we've never made that same exception for anything else.

Anyway, about UFO Robot Grendizer: Feast of the Wolves in particular, it's awesome. It really feels like playing an episode of the old TV show. And I actually honestly believe that most of the flaws that reviewers didn't like were actually done on purpose. The story is dumb as rocks, the dialogue is bad, and the voice acting is awful, but I think that was all intentional because THAT'S WHAT ANIME WAS LIKE IN THE 70'S! It's extremely authentic and that just makes me love it all the more. It's extremely corny but in a legitimate "so bad its good" way.

The gameplay is third-person beat-em-up and it's wonderful. Epic theme music plays during battles. Your character calls out all of the super moves they are performing. It's campy and corny and amazing. I loved it. The MSRP is $40, but you can get it on sale for a lot less pretty often. I paid $18 for it on Xbox and am very happy with that price. I highly recommend fans of giant robot anime, especially the shows from the 70's, to check it out!
