Except you will kind of wish the option to pay to win was still available, though, because it is extremely ridiculously overwhelmingly grindy to the point that late game content is basically impossible to beat without spending dozens of hours playing the same missions over and over.
The idea of the game is that you unlock characters that you can add to a 10 card deck. You then "play" these cards in a sort of tower defense scenario in order to protect your base while advancing on the enemy base and destroying it. Each character has different stats and strengths and weaknesses and abilities so you are supposed to build a strong team that counters what your opponent throws at you. With a well made team you can set the game to automatically play and they'll just plough through the opponent.
Getting to that well made team requires a lot of grinding and repetition, though. You have to grind to unlock characters. Then grind to level them up. Then grind for items to level up character abilities. There are multiple massive difficulty spikes in the various modes - that you have to play all of in order to make progress ... - so it's just grind grind grind grind grind. The grinding is at least rewarding because you always know that you can simply grind enough that you can just overpower difficult missions, but that's kinda not fun. For $10, though, even if it's grindy and not so fun towards the end, you still get your money's worth.
Also worth noting is that the game has an excess of anime waifus for some reason. There are the recognizable Metal Slug series characters and units we all know and love, but also dozens and dozens of hot anime girls as well that totally clash with the art style of the Metal Slug series. We're not complaining - we love anime waifus - but it's just weird, OK?
