Chio's School Road Review - Comedy GOLD!

Welcome back weebs to another anime review from Otakunofuji! Today's review is Chio's School Road, another sort of under the radar comedy that I think is one of the funniest anime ever made. It's also another one where the first episode doesn't make the best first impression, but if you stick with it the rest is absolute solid gold.

Chio's School Road is mostly about a high school girl named Chio walking to school and the weird crap her and her friends do on the way. There's her best friend Manana, popular track star Yuki, school disciplinary committee member Momo, and Kabbadi-obsessed Kushitori. There's also an older guy named Ando who is a former biker gang leader who quit his gang after Chio accidentally kicked his ass and knocked him out with a wildly flailing elbow and now he has a crush on her. Yeah, that last one is a doozy.

The comedy comes from how all of these characters with different personalities and backgrounds all somehow meet at the middle at Chio. Standout moments include playing Kabbadi, a musical number called "Mananachio", Chio escaping a men's restroom, taking Momo to her first dagashi shop, taking sexy photos only to have a barfing cat photo bomb them, Chio getting a makeover, Chio's stanky armpits, having an ass off with Ando's sister, and a ton more. Every episode has at least one, and usually more, golden memorable moment you'll giggle about long after you watch it. It's freaking amazing.

So why isn't CHio's School Road more popular? Well, Chio herself probably has a lot to do with that. The show isn't fanservicey and the characters, especially Chio and Manana, are pretty plain looking, so it isn't the type of show that catches your eye when you're looking for something new on Crunchyroll. Chio's personality is likely pretty off-putting for people, too, as she insists on being just barely average in all things so she can scrape by through her school life and not draw a lot of attention, which is kind of frustrating as a viewer to be honest. She's also sort of a reverse weeb who loves western developed video games like Grand Theft Auto, online multiplayer shooters, and Assassin's Creed, but who also has a slight touch of chunibyo and occasionally likes to try and reenact her video game escapades in the real world. Personally, I find her relatable and charming - and I like redheads anyway ... - but I don't doubt other people will find her annoying and cringey. Especially in the first episode that doesn't waste any time in laying all of Chio's personality quirks on the table right away.

I beg you to give the show a try anyway, though. Its funniest moments are right up there among the very best anime has to offer and more than makes up for how awkward you might find Chio to be. I think she's great, though.

I just love Chio's School Road. It's legitimately one of the funniest anime ever and it's charming and thoroughly entertaining.
